The recent worldwide anti-racism protests have fueled a heated discussion over a number of public artworks, monuments and street names around the world and in Germany. Once perceived as honorable, today some of them are considered offensive. So who decides what stays, and what goes – and how is that decision made? The German city of Coburg is grappling with that very question, as a petition circulates demanding that the town change its Coat of Arms, which is meant to depict the local patron saint, Saint Maurice, also known as the ‘Moor’ of Coburg.
